The Most Precious Baby

Where hope grows, miracles happen. This is one such story of a childless couple—Aziz and Nilufar—from Uzbekistan.

Craving to hold a little baby in their arms whom they could call their own, but unable to have one, always troubled them. Disappointed after consulting numerous doctors in their home country, they heard about one of our IVF success stories through a friend.
The couple reached out to us in hopes of finally being able to get pregnant and start a family. Upon initial consultation, we found out that the problem was with Aziz and not with Nilufar. He suffered from Azoospermia – a condition where the semen does not contain measurable levels of sperm. This was a typical case of male infertility.

We decided to go for a trial TESA to see if sperms could be aspirated from the testicles directly. Fortunately, the result of the trial TESA was positive. This gave us the initial boost required to proceed with the IVF treatment.

We began with routine investigations of blood tests, diagnostic hysteroscopy, etc. Finally, the day for Ovum Pick Up (OPU) and Embryo Transfer (ET) arrived. Everything went well and smoothly. Aziz and Nilufar flew back to their home country and waited till the BETA HCG results arrived.

The test report was negative. Both Aziz and Nilufar were crestfallen and disappointed. Since they had no frozen embryos, the entire process would have to be repeated, including TESA (already done twice).
A few months later, they decided to try again and landed in India. This time too, everything went well. In fact, better than the previous time as the number of embryos fertilized was much higher. This enabled them the option to freeze the balance embryos for future use.

The big day for embryo transfer arrived, and three healthy embryos were transferred to Nilufar. Not taking any chances, the couple decided to stay back for their BETA HCG test results this time.

Tears of joy welled up in everyone’s eyes as we read the report which said Nilufar was pregnant. The IVF cycle had been successful. A repeat test done 48 hours later to reconfirm was even more encouraging, yet a little disturbing. The value had risen very high indicating Nilufar was pregnant with triplets – a condition very risky for her.

We advised them for reduction but Aziz was adamant about retaining all three. Equipped with all advice instructions and medicines, they flew back. Months passed and we did not hear from them. Anxious as we were about Nilufar’s progress, we got a distraught call on one fine day from Aziz’s brother. He told us that Nilufar had to get all three aborted through a C-section in the 5th month of pregnancy due to complications and threats to her life.

Persistent as Aziz was, a year later he decided to come again especially since there were a fair number of frozen embryos. This was his third attempt at becoming a dad.

However, this was not to be and the third cycle failed. A few months passed and the heartstrings tugged again.

Aziz arrived with Nilufar. This time, he had put everything at stake and was desperate. So were we for a positive outcome, especially since the balance count of frozen embryos stood at four. However, things were difficult and many precautions were required, keeping in mind the previous history. The cycle had to be prolonged stretching to almost two months.

Exercising utmost caution, the doctors decided to do a sequential transfer of two embryos followed by a blastocyst transfer. It paid off. The BETA HCG result was positive. Destiny and luck had favored them. As we repeated the BETA HCG, apprehensions rose again, since this time too, Nilufar was pregnant with triplets.

Now, Aziz had no choice but to get the reduction done. For this, they had to stay on longer.  But by now, Nilufar was homesick and longed to be with her family. Aziz decided to take her home only to return a few weeks later for the reduction. After much apprehension and an anxious phase, it was finally done. Not taking any chances, Nilufar was persuaded to stay back for some time so that she could be monitored

closely. After a few weeks when everything seemed to be safe and sound, they headed back to Uzbekistan.

All was quiet for a few months till our team reached out wanting to hear some good news, which we did! Nilufar had delivered twins a boy and a girl. Unfortunately, the boy did not survive due to birth complications. However, ‘the precious little baby’ lives on and has given her parents ample joy along with a reason for us to celebrate too.

This was a roller coaster journey to parenthood for Aziz and Nilufar, but the end made it completely worth it for them.
