Sperm Retrieval

It is any method used to procure sperm from the male partner who does not have them in their ejaculate.

Common Indications for Sperm Retrieval

Obstructive Azoospermia (blockage in the reproductive tract that stops sperm from getting into semen)
Non-obstructive Azoospermia (low or no sperm)
Anejaculation (no seminal fluid reaches the urethra)
Retrograde ejaculation (semen flows the wrong way into the urethra)

Techniques of Sperm Retrieval

Testicular Sperm Aspiration (TESA)

A fine needle is passed into the testis under local anesthesia and testicular tissue is aspirated using negative pressure. This tissue is then processed in the IVF lab and checked for the presence of sperms to fertilize the eggs. The sperms can also be cryopreserved for potential use later.

Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (PESA)

Men with obstructive azoospermia have a block in their transport passage (as in a congenital absence of vas deferens, vasectomy, or ejaculatory duct obstruction). The sperm is aspirated percutaneously using a needle generally from the epididymis. The retrieved sperm is then used to fertilize the egg or cryopreserved.
