Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in one or both lungs. As they grow, these abnormal cells can form tumors and interfere with the functioning of the lung.

Types of Lung Cancer

Non-small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC)

It is the most common type of lung cancer that accounts for more than 80% of cases. It can be either squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, or large-cell carcinoma.

Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC)

It is a less common type of lung cancer but usually spreads faster than non-small cell lung cancer.

Signs & Symptoms of Lung Cancer

  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Coughing up blood
  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • Loss of appetite
  • Sudden weight loss
  • Clucking of fingernails
  • Wheezing
  • Inflammation or swelling on the face and/or neck
  • Constant fatigue

Treatment of Lung Cancer

Lung cancer treatment depends on several factors, including the type, size, and stage of the cancer and the patient’s overall health

Surgery

  • Lobectomy: In this procedure, one or more large parts of the lung (called lobes) are removed..
  • Pneumonectomy: This surgery removes the entire lung and is used in cases where the cancer is located in the middle of the lung or has spread throughout the lung.
  • Wedge Resection or Segmentectomy: It involves removing a small piece of the lung and is suitable only if the cancer is limited to one area.
  • Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA): RFA is a minimally invasive procedure that involves inserting a needle into the tumor to destroy the cancer with an electrical current.

Radiotherapy

Also known as radiation treatment, this therapy destroys or shrinks lung cancer tumors by focusing high-energy rays on the cancer cells. It can be used as the main treatment or after surgery to kill the remaining cancer cells.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy uses powerful cancer-killing medication to treat cancer. There are several ways it can be used:

  • Before surgery to shrink a tumor
  • After surgery to prevent the cancer from recurring
  • Relieve symptoms and slow down the spread of cancer
  • Combined with radiotherapy

Targeted Therapy

Targeted therapy targets molecular pathways in lung cancer using special drugs. It is especially useful for the treatment of advanced disease and bone metastasis.

Adjuvant Therapy

This therapy is a combination of radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and targeted therapy. It is used to lower the risk of recurrence of lung cancer after surgery.
