A penile prosthesis is another treatment option for men with erectile dysfunction. A penile prosthesis is a device which is implanted within the body to produce an erectile state enabling the man to have normal sexual intercourse. It does not interfere with normal functions such as urination, ejaculation, sensation or organsm.

What is Erectile Dysfunction?

It is the persistent inability to maintain an erection that is firm enough, or lasts long enough to have sexual intercourse. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability of a man to attain and/or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual activity.

Types of Penile Prosthesis

  1. Non-inflatable, Semi-rigid Devices
  2. Inflatable Devices

Non-inflatable, Semi-rigid devices consist of rods implanted into the erection chambers of the penis and can be bent into position as needed for sexual penetration. The penis is always semi-rigid and merely needs to be lifted or adjusted into the erect position to initiate sex.

Inflatable Prosthesis is made of cylinders placed in the erection chambers of the penis. The scrotum holds the pump to be used for patient activated inflation / deflation. The reservoir which stores the fluid is placed in the abdomen. Squeezing the pump several times transfers the fluid from the reserviour to the chambers thereby inflating the cylinders. The prosthesis can be two piece or three piece depending on the specific situation and needs.

One small surgical cut is made either above the penis where it joins the abdomen or under the penis where it joins the scrotum. No tissue is removed, blood loss is small and blood transfusion is almost never required. If doctor is implanting a two-piece inflatable device, a pump and valve are placed inside the scrotum. For a three-piece device, doctor will also implant a fluid reservoir under the abdominal wall through an internal incision. A patient will typically spend one night in the hospital.
