Penile Prosthesis

It is a device implanted within the body to produce an erectile state enabling men to have normal sexual intercourse. It does not interfere with normal functions such as urination, ejaculation, sensation, and orgasm.

Types of Penile Prosthesis

Non-inflatable, Semi-rigid Devices

These consist of rods implanted into the erection chambers of the penis and can be bent into position as needed for sexual penetration.

Inflatable Prosthesis

It is made of cylinders placed in the erection chambers of the penis. The scrotum holds the pump to be used for patient-activated inflation/deflation.

Signs & Symptoms of Penile Prosthesis Need

  • Prostate Cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Trauma or surgery in prostate
  • Erectile Dysfunction that’s situational, the result of a relationship conflict, or potentially reversible
  • An infection, such as a pulmonary infection or urinary tract infection
  • Dermatitis, wounds, or skin lesions on your penis or scrotum
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Hormone problems

Treatment of Penile Prosthesis

  • One small surgical cut is made either above the penis where it joins the abdomen or under the penis where it joins the scrotum. If the doctor is implanting a two-piece inflatable device, a pump and valve are placed inside the scrotum. For a three-piece device, the doctor will also implant a fluid reservoir under the abdominal wall through an internal incision.
