What is ICL?
Implantable Collamer Lens is a special lens that works with the eye to correct refractive error or eye vision. Unlike contact lenses that require be applying and removing, the ICL is placed inside the eye between the iris and the natural lens. That abolishes the need of contact lenses and spectacles. Once the lens is implanted it stays permanently in the eye. If your vision changes over time, the lenses can be easily removed or replaced.
Comparisons between Contact lenses and ICL
The ICL is made from Collamer, a hydrophilic, collagen copolymer. Collamer is highly specialized material which ensures that the lens is thin enough and inert enough to not create any disturbance to the other parts of the eye. Since it is placed inside the eye, this is a onetime procedure and there is no daily applying and removal procedure, no need for any special care as is with contact lenses.
Compared ICL with other refractive procedure
ICL delivers sharper vision, clearer, and more vivid vision and higher patient satisfaction. The immediate improvement of vision quality and the remarkably short and painless recovery
ICL is similar to Cataract surgery. But unlike LASIK and PRK the ICL procedure does not remove any eye tissue, and unlike cataract surgery doesn’t remove any crystalline lens. The whole process takes 10-15 mins. Usually both eyes are not done on the same day.
There is a gap of one or two days or even more depending on the patient. During procedure a small opening is create in the iris that is used to insert the lens. Eye drop is used to protect the eye during lens implantation. The small incision is made in the cornea and the soft folded lens is implant. The implanted lens is invisible in the eye.
