Dental veneers (sometimes called porcelain veneers or dental porcelain laminates) are wafer-thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve your appearance.
Veneers – It is a thin layer of material used to cover the tooth to enhance the look and improve aesthetics which may have been spoilt due to staining, chipping or decayed. Crooked teeth can also cover with veneers to reshape them. Sometimes a veneer may be used to protect the tooth from damage.
Placing veneers is usually an irreversible process, because it’s necessary to remove a small amount of enamel from the tooth to accommodate the shell.
Because a portion of the original tooth enamel is reduced, a veneer is not considered a reversible treatment. Although adjustments and even new veneers can be made, the one can never reliably return to the original condition of the tooth.
Reasons for porcelain veneers:
- Severely discoloured or stained teeth
- Gaps or uneven spaces between teeth
- Worn or chipped teeth
- Crooked teeth or misaligned teeth
- Uneven size of teeth or teeth that are too small or large
- Misshapen teeth
- Cosmetic reasons to create a uniform, bright and beautiful smile
Porcelain veneers exhibit remarkable property to mimic tooth structure and are excellent option for smile makeovers. Getting a porcelain veneer generally involves two visits. In the first visit the teeth are lightly prepared to allow for the thickness of the veneer. In some cases NO PREP veneers offer, which requires no cutting of the tooth. After the tooth is prepared for a veneer, impressions and moulds of teeth are made. It is then sent to the laboratory for veneer fabrication along with the shade (or desired colour of the veneers). During the second visit, teeth are cleaned and prepared for bonding. The veneer is then cemented onto the tooth using adhesive technology, which ensures a strong and durable bond. There are various types of dental veneers; however, the choice depends on the aesthetic needs of the patient, strength required durability and cost factors.
Porcelain Veneers are most suitable for fractured or discolored teeth. Other dental treatments such as bleaching or whitening may not help in restoring the original colour of the teeth. In such situations porcelain veneers is most suited. It may also be used to correct the bite related problems.
